REASON#1: A BLOG MAKES YOU AN EXPERT IN YOUR FIELD
There’s the misconception that you have to be an expert in something to start a blog. This is not true! It’s the other way round. You have to start a blog on something to become an expert on it.
REASON#2: A BLOG MAKES YOU KNOWN IN YOUR INDUSTRY
Is it possible to not have to apply for jobs but have jobs come to you? Absolutely! And the best way to do this is to start a blog. Did you know that 80% of the available positions are never advertised? That means that 80% of the available jobs are filled by the employer going to the potential employee, not the other way round. When you create a blog, it’s almost as if you set a 24-hour trap for jobs! It’s awesome!
REASON#3: YOU CAN MAKE MONEY FROM YOUR BLOG
A lot of people think it’s not possible (or really hard) to make money on blogs nowadays. This is not true. In fact, if you start a blog and are consistent, it is very difficult NOT to make money. It’s hard to make money on a blog in a few months, but it’s easy to make money on a blog if you give it a couple of years.
REASON#4: IT’S SO MUCH FUN!
When you start a blog and start writing posts, after you submit a few posts, you begin to get an incredible sense of satisfaction as you see your blog grow. As your blog grows, you become more inspired to write more and more, and the more you write the more fun you’ll have. You’ll get into a self perpetuating cycle of blissful productivity. It’s utterly fulfilling! It’s so much fun!
REASON#5: IT’S LIKE MEDITATION
Starting a blog and committing to a regular schedule to submit posts is a kind of meditation. You set aside some time every week (or every day) to write on your blog. This is the time that you set aside for YOU. This is YOUR time. Starting a blog is a great excuse to unplug from your daily life and be creative. You don’t have to follow anybody’s rules or satisfy anybody’s demands. It’s a way of meditating.
REASON#6: IT’S A GREAT LONG TERM INVESTMENT
Think about what starting a blog will do for you 5 years from now, 10 years from now, or 20 years from now. The amount of knowledge you will have gained and the extent of insight that you will have acquired in your field is going to be incredible. By starting a blog you will change your life’s path for the better and you will end up in a much better place (carrier-wise, financial-wise, happiness-wise, etc) than if you had not started a blog.
REASON#7: YOUR BLOG WILL GUIDE YOU
As your blog grows, things will become clearer to you. Paths will open up to you. Your vision will become broadened. You will be able to make decisions that you wouldn’t have been able to make before. You will get to know yourself better. Your blog posts will literally guide you in your life.
REASON#8: IT’S TOO RISKY NOT TO START A BLOG
An increasing number of people are starting blogs in their fields. You don’t want to fall behind, do you? The entire market is shifting. The old way of sending resumes out and hoping for an interview is dying out. That’s why nowadays it’s becoming so hard to get a response back after a job application. Don’t fall behind! Now is the time to start laying a foundation for your personal brand. It takes time to establish your personal brand, so you should start NOW!
MYTH #1: I HAVE TO BE AN EXPERT IN SOMETHING TO START A BLOG ON IT
Not true! You start a blog on something IN ORDER TO become an expert in it. Look at the most successful bloggers out there. They became experts in their fields SEVERAL YEARS AFTER they started blogging.
MYTH #2: IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE MONEY DOING BLOGS NOWADAYS
Not true! There are MANY, let me repeat MANY, income generating blogs out there. You just need to be consistent and persistent and money will come sooner than you expect.
STEP #1: CHOOSE A DOMAIN
Ideally, your domain name should have something to do with your field. For example, since my field is software development, I chose “mymicrocontroller.com” as my domain name. You can also use your full-name as your domain name to build your personal brand. Alternatively, if you already have a business, or a side business, you can use your business’s name as your domain name. Last but not least, you can just use a catchy and creative domain name that will grab peoples’ attention. One word of caution though, make sure your domain name is not too complicated or confusing and make sure it’s easy to remember.
STEP #2: DECIDE BLOG PLATFORM
There are numerous blogging platforms out there, but there is one that almost all successful bloggers use: WordPress. WordPress is extremely powerful and scalable and it has literally millions of themes and plugins that you can use.
STEP #3: GET HOSTING
Although you can get free blog hosting (for example: blogger.com), I would recommend against it for 3 reasons:
REASON #1: Your blog will almost certainly grow if you are persistent and a free blog hosting will simply not have the tools for you to scale and MONETIZE your blog.
REASON #2: You’re trying to build your personal brand and so you must have a CUSTOM DOMAIN NAME. Free blog hosting services force you to use their domain name.
REASON #3: When your blog does grow (and it will!), it will be extremely hard to transfer, so it’s best to think long term and lay your foundation strong.
This blog is hosted by BlueHost and I’ve had great experience with them. The good thing with BlueHost is that they have three different plans that you can choose from. If you’re just starting, I would recommend the cheapest plan (it’s called the “basic plan”). You can always upgrade later if you want. They have a 30-day money back guarantee and 24/7 support, which is great if you’re just starting out. I’ve found their prices to be super competitive. One thing to be aware of is that for new signups they charge for an annual plan. After a year, you will have the option to switch to monthly basis.
STEP #4: SELECT YOUR PLAN AND REGISTER DOMAIN
First, head over to BlueHost by clicking on this linkthen click on “Get Started Now”. Then select the plan that you want to get (if you’re a beginner, I recommend the basic plan).
Type in the domain name that you chose in STEP#1 in the “New Domain” box and click “Next”. If the domain name that you chose is taken, you will be provided with some alternatives that you can choose from, or you can choose a different domain name. It’s absolutely expected that the domain names that you choose are taken, so you have to be a little bit patient here and try out different things. If you can’t decide on a good domain name, you can always continue and choose your domain name later.
Enter your personal information and choose your account plan (1-year, 2-year, 3-year). I recommend choosing the 3-year plan since it’s the cheapest per month. Besides, you can always cancel with a full refund within 30-days. Also, getting a long term plan (and paying for it), makes you that much more obligated to actually spend time on creating your blog and will actually increase the chances of success.
Enter your payment information on the next page.
Now you need to create a password for your account.
Create your password and click next.
And you’re done with the hosting part. You now have your own domain name and hosting. Congrats! Now let’s go to the next step to set up the blog.
STEP #5: PICK A WORDPRESS THEME
On the next page, choose “Log in to WordPress”.
Pick a theme that you like.
Click on “Start Building”.
Choose the site type: Business vs. Personal. I would just choose “Personal” unless you have an actual business already.
Click on “Launch”.
Give your blog a good title and a good description. Remember, you won’t get it perfect the first time. You can change these later. Just pick something for now. Later, as you blog more and more, you will be able to adjust your title and description. Follow the next steps in the launch box.
STEP #6: WRITE YOUR FIRST POST
Click on the “Posts” item on the left hand side menu. Then click on “Add New” (top left corner), and start writing your first blog post!
When you are done, click on “Publish” to get your post published.
Congratulations! You have just created a blog and submitted your first post! You have just started a journey that will make you grow in so many different ways. Just by starting a blog, you are ahead of the curve and positioned for great success. But remember, the secret recipes to a successful blog are…
SUCCESS RECIPE #1: CONSISTENCY
Commit to a schedule for your posts. Are you going to post every day? Every week? Commit to a blogging plan.
SUCCESS RECIPE #2: PERSISTENCE
Don’t worry about getting visitors for now. Just keep writing. Expect to see no traction for a year. After a year, if you have been consistent and persistent, you will start seeing results. If you give it enough time, you will start seeing exponential growth in your readership.
